“Good Morning! Have you ever
watched the news and seen a story, for example, about somebody wrongfully
incarcerated for decades or heard a story of an atrocity committed on the other
side of the world, or saw the ravages of war flash on your TV screen and you
had that sinking feeling of helplessness? You want to do something but the problem just seems so huge
and you are just you?
Do you know that you actually have the power to bring about
world peace? I am a novice student of Kabbala, the mystical sect of Judaism. And I love the teaching of the great Kabbalist, Rabbi Ashlag and the simple analogy he gives to
show how each of us can have a tremendous impact on the entire world.
One day, the Rabbi put a balance scale on the table and he
said to his students, 'Could you please place an equal amount of sesame seeds
on each side of the scale?' Rabbi Ashlag then explained to his students that we
are at a very precarious time in the history of creation, where there is a
great battle going on between good and evil. Then he explained to his students
that the seeds on one side of the scale represent the pain, the darkness, the suffering,
the unhappiness in the world; an age of destruction. And the seeds on the other
side represent the joy, the light, the happiness, the kindness, the love, the good;
a golden age of enlightenment.
Then he told his students that every time they do something that
is hurtful or mean or dishonest or causes suffering to another, they add a seed
to one side of the scale. And every time they do an act of kindness or giving
or love without the need for thanks, they drop a seed on the other side.
And if there are equal amounts of seeds on both sides, how many
seeds would it take to tip the scales one way or the other? The answer is one. And it just might be one act that you do. Do
you get this? You never have to feel helpless again. You are more powerful than
you can imagine. The age of enlightenment is in your hands.”
